Belonging to the canidae family, the fennec, also known as the sand fox, is distinguished by its small size. That's why it's also known as the pocket fox. It measures between 20 and 40 cm and weighs an average of 1.5 kg. The fennec is one of the world's smallest canids. Another special feature of the fennec is its long, large ears, which are indispensable for listening to and spotting prey during its hunting activities. Since the fennec lives in very hot regions, it has hairy paw pads that protect it from hot sand. Its sand-colored coat, from which it takes its name, is particularly striking. Its belly is whiter.
The fennec lives mainly in the deserts of North Africa, particularly in the Sahara, in countries like Algeria.In fact, this animal is the mascot of the Algerian national soccer team.It also lives in Saudi Arabia.It can also be found on the steppes.The fennec lives in burrows that can be up to 10 meters deep.This enables it to escape the scorching desert temperatures.It can live up to 12 years in the wild.
The fennec feeds on insects such as ground beetles and grasshoppers, and also enjoys gerbils and other rodents.It's also a great fan of lizards, eggs and birds.Since it lives in the desert, it doesn't need much water.They may drink from the rare oases they can find, but their diet provides the hydration they need.
Fennec pairs are formed for life.Mating usually takes place between January and February.The female gives birth after a two-month gestation period.When they are born, the babies are blind, and it takes around ten days before they can see. Gradually, they also acquire their distinctive large ears. It takes 60 days before they are completely weaned. During this time, the father is responsible for feeding his family.
